The following seem to be the most common causes for this problem:
Faulty height sensors
Faulty self-leveling pump or level sensor on the pump.

Here is a very nice DIY that teaches you how to reset the SES light and fix your suspension:

1) Make sure there are no leaks in your suspension system, if so get em fixed before going any further. If it’s only one corner of the car leaking, then keep in mind that you will need to drive at least 50-60miles for each corner lost.

2) Park your car on flat ground and turn the engine off. Move the steering wheel all the way up and unscrew the bottom bolt from the steering linkage17mm). Turn wheels all the way to the right (if the car is turned on, the steering wheel is turned all the way to the right, and suspension is at its lowest position).

3) Jack up the entire chassis from either side using a 4-6″x4″ block of wood. Be extremely careful when doing this, because there are two 25lb gas-filled shock absorbers that can come crashing down if not done properly. Make sure you have a good sturdy jack and use a block of wood so that you don’t damage your car in any way! Also, if you have ever changed tires before you will know that a tire iron fits very nicely into a shock absorber’s top mounting nut – this works just as well too! You can also purchase special hydraulic jacks that raise the car evenly.

4) Once the chassis is raised, remove shocks by turning them counterclockwise.

5) Now you can reach the 2 self-leveling pump bolts. The one on the right (looking from the front of the car) is a little harder to get to, but can be accessed with a socket wrench.

6) Unplug the electrical connector from the pump and unscrew the pump from the bracket (3 screws). Take a look at your new pump and level sensor (if it’s faulty, you will need to order this part from BMW).

7) Install a new pump and level sensor (or if your old one is just fine, re-install it in the same way as before), making sure that the connector is plugged back in.

8) Now you can put the shocks back on – tighten to specs that are available online.
