Eating Habits of Vultures

Vulture is a term used to describe 22 species of large carrion-eating birds that live primarily in the tropics and subtropics. Condors are among the seven New World vulture species, while the lammergeyer and griffons are among the 15 Old World species. Even though many members of the two groups look alike, they are only distantly related. The bare heads of all New World vultures, as well as some Old World vultures, prevent feathers from matting with blood when the birds enter within carcasses. Adaptations to a feast-or-famine scavenging lifestyle include a large pouch in the throat (crop) and the ability to go for long stretches without food. The beak of certain animals is particularly strong and powerful, allowing it to tear hide, muscle, and even bone. Both vultures have good eyesight, and the turkey vulture has a good sense of smell. The feet of Old World vultures are comparatively strong, while the feet of New World vultures are flat, thin, and poorly adapted for grasping.
