There is no limit to where you can drill the holes on the joist (first photo). Drilling holes up to 1-1/2 inches in diameter almost anywhere in the web area of manufactured I-joists is possible (the area between the flanges). Just make it to six o’clock.

Does screwing into a joist weaken it?
Compression occurs at the top and tension occurs at the bottom of a joist when weight is applied. Holes and notches that are either too small or too far apart weaken the joist, causing it to sag and eventually fail.
Can you use screws on floor joists?
Subfloors should be nailed down with corrosion-resistant nails that will last a long time and securely hold them in place. You can also use screws, which are easier to remove, but they are less durable. In terms of reducing floor noise, screws are better, but they take longer to install.
Where should you not drill holes in joists?
No more than a third of the depth of a joist should be penetrated by holes. No holes that are less than 2 inches from the top or bottom of the plate. Any hole or notch that is less than 2 inches from another hole or notch must be avoided.
Can you hang something from a floor joist?
Floor joists are spaced, on average, 16 inches apart from one another. Spreading the weight over three joists reduces the amount of weight per joist to only 100 pounds (very doable). In order to avoid sagging, you can use 2 bolts per joist, which is only 50 lbs per bolt, to distribute the weight (very doable).
How much of a joist can be notched?
No more than 0.125 times the depth of the joists should be used. Shouldn’t be any closer to the support than 0.07 times the span or any further away than 0.25 times the span from the support, respectively.
How long do floor joists last?
Maintaining the stability and reasonable dryness of the environment where the wood floor trusses are installed can extend their life expectancy to more than 100 years. A floor truss’s lifespan can be shortened by moisture issues such as condensation, plumbing leaks, and even termites.
